大暑是二十四节气中的第十二个节气，也是夏季的最后一个节气。“暑”是炎热的意思，大暑，指炎热之极。大暑相对小暑，更加炎热，是一年中阳光最猛烈、最炎热的节气，“湿热交蒸”在此时到达顶点。
The traditional Chinese solar (太阳的) calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Major Heat, Dashu in Chinese, is the 12th solar term of the year.

During Major Heat, the sunshine, high temperatures, and heavy rainfall are good for crops. But many natural disasters such as floods and droughts also happen during Major Heat. Therefore, it’s important to collect and plant crops in time to avoid loss.
在大暑期间，阳光、高温和强降雨对农作物有利。但许多自然灾害，如洪水和干旱也会发生在大暑期间。因此，及时收集和种植作物以避免损失是很重要的。
Sending the Major Heat ship is a tradition in Taizhou, Zhejiang province. The ship is filled with various animals for sacrifice (祭祀) such as pigs, sheep, chicken, and fish. More than 50 fishermen take turns carrying the ship as they walk through the streets. Drums are played and fireworks are lit. Both sides of the street are filled with people. After a series of ceremonies, the ship is finally carried to the port. Then, it is pulled out of the port and burned at sea. People carry out this to hope for good harvests and health.
送大暑船是浙江台州的传统。船上装满了各种动物作为祭品，如猪、羊、鸡和鱼。50多名渔民轮流抬着船穿过街道。人们击鼓，燃放烟花。街道两边都挤满了人。经过一系列仪式，这艘船最终被抬到港口。然后，它被拉出港口，在海上被烧毁。人们这样做是为了希望丰收和健康。
Major Heat is a season with the largest number of crickets (蟋蟀) that can be found in the fields along the countryside. Cricket fighting is very popular for some people in China during this period. This custom dates back more than 1,000 years to the Tang Dynasty.
大暑是乡村田野中蟋蟀数量最多的季节。在这一时期，中国的一些人非常喜欢斗蟋蟀。这种习俗可以追溯到1000多年前的唐朝。
On the day of Major Heat, people in Putian, Fujian province often eat litchi. People usually put litchi in cold well water first and eat it. In southern Shandong province, it is a custom to drink mutton (羊肉) soup during Major Heat. It’s called “summer mutton soup.” Grass jelly, Xiancaodong in Chinese, is eaten in Guangdong during Major Heat. It is described in a popular saying that goes, “eating herb jelly in Major Heat will make you stay young like the immortals (神仙).”
在大暑的日子里，福建莆田的人们经常吃荔枝。人们通常先把荔枝放在凉井水里吃。在山东南部，大暑时喝羊汤是一种习俗。它被称为““喝暑羊”。凉粉草，中国的仙草，在广东大暑时吃。俗话说：“大暑吃仙草，活如神仙老。”
