Carving is a highly valued art in Lanzhou, Gansu’s capital. It has been practiced for over a thousand years. The artists carve thin-skinned egg gourds from the area, requiring great skill to avoid ruining the piece.

Lanzhou’s gourd carving started during the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420) when gourds were used for wine along the ancient Silk Road. Over time, the simple act of painting turned into detailed engraving and painting, becoming a job for many during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Carving tiny, egg-sized gourds is the highest level of Lanzhou’s gourd carving skill.

Ruan Xiyue, born in 1987, has been perfecting her craft for over ten years, a tradition in her family for four generations, or more than 80 years. Her right hand is bigger and rougher from years of carving, showing her dedication to the art.
阮熙越，1987年出生，十多年来一直在完善自己的手艺，这是她家族四代人的传统，也就是80多年。经过多年的雕刻，她的右手变得更大更粗糙，显示出她对艺术的奉献精神。
At first, Ruan struggled with the weight of her family’s artistic legacy, but the popularity of the game “Travel Frog” among young people inspired her to create a utopian (乌托邦的) world with the frog’s image, boosting her confidence. Ruan uses gourds as a canvas and gradually adds elements from animation, cultural relics (纪念物), and other creative products. She creates gourd mirrors, accessories, tea canisters, bags, and more.
起初，阮在家庭艺术遗产的重压下挣扎，但游戏“旅行青蛙”在年轻人中的流行激发了她用青蛙的形象创造一个乌托邦世界的灵感，增强了她的信心。阮以葫芦为画布，逐渐加入动画、文物和其他创意产品的元素。她制作葫芦镜、饰品、茶罐、包等。
As culture becomes a part of daily life and gains public appreciation, an increasing number of people are learning Lanzhou gourd carving from Ruan. Since the beginning of this year, she has welcomed over 1,000 visitors per week for study tours. Ruan said that many children are amazed by gourd carving and say, “No wonder this is intangible cultural heritage,” which deeply moves her. Inspired by Ruan Xiyue, her retired mother, Ruan Lin, is now learning to use social media to connect with the younger generation and provide technical guidance for her daughter’s projects.
随着文化成为日常生活的一部分并获得公众的欣赏，越来越多的人向阮学习兰州刻葫芦。自今年年初以来，她每周接待1000多名游学游客。阮说，许多孩子对刻葫芦感到惊讶，并说：“难怪这是非物质文化遗产”，这深深地打动了她。受到阮熙越的启发，她退休的母亲阮琳现在正在学习如何使用社交媒体与年轻一代建立联系，并为女儿的项目提供技术指导。
“Culture thrives on collective efforts. When many hands come together, the flame of culture burns brighter,” said Ruan Lin.
