According to Chinese legend, the Meng family — consisting of an old childless couple, lived next door to the Jiang family — also an old childless couple — in Jiangnan. One year, Old Man Meng planted a gourd vine (葫芦藤). The vine grew into his neighbor’s yard and produced a gourd there. Both families agreed to share it. When they cut open the gourd, they found a baby girl inside. Surprised and happy, both couples wanted to adopt her. After neighbors intervened, they decided to raise her together. They named her Meng Jiang Nv.
根据中国的传说，在江南，孟家是一对没有孩子的老夫妇，他们住在姜家的隔壁。姜家也是一对没有孩子的老夫妇。有一年，孟家丈夫种了一棵葫芦。葫芦藤长到他邻居的院子里，在那里结了葫芦。两家人都同意分享这个葫芦。当他们切开葫芦时，发现里面有一个女婴。两对夫妇既惊讶又高兴，都想收养她。在邻居们的干预下，他们决定一起抚养她。他们给她起名叫孟姜女。
When Meng Jiang grew up, she chose to marry a young man named Fan Xiliang. But on their wedding day, soldiers took Xiliang to work on the Great Wall. Life there was hard and many workers died. After a year without any news from Xiliang, Meng Jiang Nv went to look for him. She traveled far to the Great Wall, only to learn that Xiliang had died from overwork and was buried under it. Distraught , Meng Jiang Nv cried and hit the wall, causing part of it to fall and uncover many bones. She then bit her finger and tested each skeleton with her blood, hoping to find her husband’s by seeing if the bones absorbed it. When she found Xiliang’s bones, she held them and wept.
当孟姜长大后，她选择嫁给一个名叫范喜良的年轻人。但在他们结婚的那天，士兵们带喜良去修筑长城。那里的生活很艰苦，许多工人都死了。一年后，喜良杳无音信，孟姜女去找他。她千里迢迢来到长城，却得知喜良因劳累过度而死，被埋在长城下。孟姜女悲痛欲绝，大哭一场，撞在墙上，造成部分倒塌，露出许多骨头。然后，她咬了自己的手指，用自己的血液测试了每一具骨骼，希望通过观察骨骼是否吸收血液来找到她丈夫的骨骼。当她找到喜良的骨头时，她抱着它们哭了。
The angry Emperor of Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. - 206 B.C.) inspected the damage to his wall. When he saw Meng Jiang Nv, he fell for her beauty and wanted to marry her. Meng Jiang said she would only marry him on three conditions — first, her former husband was to be given a grand burial; second, the emperor and his court must go into mourning for Xiliang; and third, she wanted to visit the ocean. The emperor agreed. After Meng Jiang Nv got her third wish, she cast herself into the ocean. The Emperor sent his men to get her back but the waves chased them away.
愤怒的秦始皇检查了城墙的损坏情况。当他看到孟姜女时，他被她的美貌迷住了，想娶她为妻。孟姜说，只有满足三个条件，她才愿意嫁给他：第一，她的前夫必须得到隆重的葬礼;第二，皇帝和朝廷官员必须为喜良哀悼;第三，她想去看看大海。皇帝同意了。孟姜女实现第三个愿望后，投海自尽。皇帝派人去救她，但海浪把他们冲走了。
The Temple of Meng Jiang Nv, first established in the Song Dynasty about 1,000 years ago, has been maintained and worshipped at the eastern beginning of the Great Wall till this day in Qinhuangdao City of Hebei Province.
约1000年前的宋朝，孟姜女寺始建，位于长城东端的河北省秦皇岛市，至今仍被保存和供奉。
